Downtown businesses before the 1947 Texas City Disaster

The city's rapid growth gave rise to housing shortages, and caused an increase in school enrollments. In 1947, the schoolchildren of Texas City went to school in double shifts to alleviate overcrowding. Shops and businesses lined Texas Avenue and 6th street, and a bus line took passengers to Galveston and LaMarque twice a day.
