Helen lived for 22 years after Hugh died. She kept up her correspondence with family and friends. She stayed on in their family home in Texas City, until about 1960 when she suffered a series of strokes and moved to a nursing home in Houston. She died in 1968, and is buried in Hitchcock, Texas, next to Hugh.
